The Chesapeake Bay Retriever Top Twenty Showcase celebrates breed excellence, education, and community. Held independently during National Specialty week, the Showcase brings together many of the breed’s top dogs and the breeders, owners, handlers, judges, and fanciers dedicated to preserving the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
At its heart, the Top Twenty recognizes dogs whose competitive success reflects the qualities described in the breed standard. These dogs represent years of thoughtful breeding, training, conditioning, and presentation. They exemplify the sound structure, correct breed type, working ability, and stable temperament that define the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
The Showcase also serves an important educational purpose. By presenting many of the nation’s leading Chesapeake Bay Retrievers in one setting, the event allows judges, breeders, exhibitors, and enthusiasts to study the breed and observe a broad range of styles, pedigrees, and breeding programs. During Qualification Years 2022 through 2025, an average of 26 kennels were represented annually by at least one qualified dog, demonstrating the depth and diversity of excellence within the breed.
The event also encourages discussion about breeding decisions, breed preservation, and the future of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Seeing outstanding dogs presented together provides valuable insight into conformation, movement, temperament, and overall balance. It also highlights the qualities that have earned the breed its reputation as a versatile, intelligent, and hardworking retriever.
Beyond its educational value, the Top Twenty Showcase has become a cherished tradition for our community. It brings together longtime friends, welcomes newcomers, and creates opportunities for mentorship and learning. While rankings and awards recognize achievement, the Showcase’s broader purpose is to celebrate the dogs and the people whose dedication helps preserve and advance the Chesapeake Bay Retriever for future generations.
